New directive forces manufacturers and operators to take action

JUMO Offers Ideal Measurement Technology for Evaporation Cooling Towers

To ensure the hygienic operation of evaporation cooling towers, the technical directive VDI 2047, sheet 2 has applied to manufacturers and operators since January 2015. JUMO supplies suitable measurement and control technology for this purpose. Humid clouds of exhaust air are created in evaporation cooling towers which contain cooling water drops as aerosols. These clouds may distribute dangerous bacteria that can cause serious illnesses when they are breathed in. The most well-known of these illnesses is Legionnaires' disease.

Since the beginning of the year, the technical directive "VDI 2047, sheet 2" has regulated the assurance of the hygienic operation of evaporation cooling towers. A legislative initiative was also started. This directive and the planned law make operators liable for hygienic maintenance, care, and operation. The aim is also to make the regulations applicable retrospectively to existing installations.

JUMO supplies suitable measurement and control devices for the equipment of new cooling towers – particularly so for the retrofitting and conversion of existing installations. The JUMO AQUIS touch S modular multichannel measuring device designed for liquid analysis is designed to ideally suit the recommendations of the VDI Directive. Apart from the desalination of the cooling tower through the measurement of the conductivity, the device also enables controlled dosing of biocides for cooling tower hygiene. It is also possible to control the desalination lock during the biocide dosing, the observance of the contact times of the biocide, and the limit value monitoring of all important parameters.

In addition, the device also offers the possibility – as required – to record data in a tamper-proof format including the date and time stamp. This allows the operator to prove the correct functioning of his cooling tower even retrospectively.
If the device is integrated into the network of the business then remote access of the data is possible. Warning and alarm reports by SMS text message or email are also possible via such a connection. This guarantees 24/7 monitoring of the cooling tower.

Other possibilities include the measurement and control of the pH value, monitoring the hygiene standard of the cooling water with a redox measurement, or the direct measurement of disinfection agents such as chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and ozone.
Moreover, the JUMO product list includes the necessary sensor technology and installation accessories. For relatively minor retrofitting projects, JUMO also supplies single-channel standard devices and measuring technology for turbidity and flow.
